More about Joan:

Joan R. Brownstein (August 27, 1948-October 22, 2020) was born to Isadore and Harriett (Slome) Brownstein. The younger of two daughters, Joan grew up in Greenfield, MA and Keene, NH. Harriett’s experiences as a refuge from Poland spurred Joan’s long term support for charity and philanthropic work.

A graduate of Dana Hall School, Joan received her undergraduate degree in Fine Art and Architecture from Cornell University and her MFA at Hunter College.

Joan’s early paintings involved pouring layers paint on canvas, evoking themes of landscapes. Joan would later teach art at Harvard and write extensively about art. Later in life, as Parkinson’s disease impacted her dexterity and ability to paint, Joan changed her artistic techniques and began focusing on photography and paintings used cut and layered paper and colored pencil.
